The St Woolos Cathedral Appeal
was launched at the Cathedral on July 7th with HM Lord Lieutenant
of Gwent, Simon Boyle reading a message from the Appeal's
Royal Patron HRH The Duke of Gloucester.
His Royal Highness wished the Appeal well adding, "This
ancient building is worthy of our support. Not only is it
an historic building in the widest sense, but also it is
vitally important for the role it plays at the very heart
of the community it serves.
My professional background and experience has encouraged
me to appreciate how buildings develop over time, along
with their need to remain relevant to their communities.
St. Woolos, over the centuries, has proved to be a good
example of this evolution, and I am very pleased to be associated
with this Appeal which has the needs of this Community at
its heart."
Earlier the Dean, The Very Revd Dr Richard Fenwick had read
a message from the Archbishop of Canterbury, the Appeal's
Ecclesiastical President.
Archbishop Rowan recalled the 'happy memories' that 'our
beloved Cathedral' has for him and his family.
The Mayor of Newport , Cllr Miqdad Al-Nuaimi, a Patron of
the Appeal spoke of the importance of the Cathedral to the
City.
