St Woolos Cathedral to mark 25th Anniversary of the ending of the Falkland Islands Conflict

The Twenty Fifth Anniversary of the ending of the Falkland Islands Conflict will be marked by a Service of Thanksgiving at St Woolos Cathedral, Newport on Sunday, June 17th at 18.30hrs.

In the presence of the Civic Heads of Gwent, a map of the Falkland Islands showing the deployment of troops on the island will be paraded to the Cathedral's High Altar by a serving TA soldier from the Newport-based 104 Regiment Royal Artillery.

The first lesson will be read by Mrs. Margaret Seymour, widow of the late Captain Bruce Seymour who was the Commander of RFA Resource during the Falkland Conflict. The second lesson will be read by the Army's Senior Chaplain in Wales Revd. David Moss CF.

The address at the service will be given by Major General The Reverend Morgan Llewellyn who is a former General Officer Commanding the army in Wales

Wales is closely linked with the greatest tragedy of the Falklands Conflict, for at Fitzroy, to the southwest of Port Stanley, the bombing of RFA Sir Galahad and RFA Sir Tristram left 54 men dead and 46 injured, many of them Welsh Guardsmen.

Minor Canon, the Revd Mark Soady CF(V), who is organising the service said, "It is important that we mark with thanksgiving the ending of this conflict which took so many Welsh lives".
