Cathedral repairs well under way By Ben Payne

VITAL work to repair the roof and south porch at Newport's St Woolos Cathedral is under way with builders about to start re-tiling the roof.

Builders, who began restoration work at St Woolos Cathedral two weeks ago, have repaired internal walls and laid a new floor.

And scaffolding has now gone up outside ready for tiling to begin.

The Reverend Mark Soady, a minor canon at the cathedral, said: "We're very pleased with the work done so far. You can already see that's it's making a difference.

"Now more delicate work to the outside of the cathedral will begin."

Supporters of the cathedral are also celebrating news that the repair fund has topped the £105,000 mark.
