ROGER HUGHES
I am a freelance broadcaster
and writer living in Newport. I was born in Monkswood near
Usk, and went to school locally until I was 11 when my parents
moved to London. Here I went to secondary school and teacher
training college. On leaving College I move to Lancashire
where I taught in a variety of schools ending up teaching
P.E. and history at Queen Elizabeth`s Grammar school in
Blackburn. In 1985 I left teaching to take up broadcasting
with BBC Local radio starting at Radio Lancashire and then
BBC Radio Merseyside where I eventually became sports editor.
In 2000 I moved to BBC Wales, leaving the BBC to work freelance
in May of this year.
My sporting career was mainly
rugby which I played for Blackheath in London, and Fylde
and Waterloo in Lancashire. I played club cricket too late
in life to have any claim to fame or fortune.
I am married with two children
a daughter of 16 who would like a career in the media or
modelling, and a son of 10 who is sport mad, and tells everyone
he will win Wimbledon!
JANE EVANS
Jane Evans emigrated to South
Wales from Bristol to be with her husband Geoff twenty years
ago. Her career was spent setting up and developing call
centres in a variety of commercial environments culminating
in Directorships with subsidiaries of the (then) Royal Insurance
and latterly HSBC. She was the first Chair of the Welsh
Call Centre Association. Following early retirement Jane
was lured into flower arranging by a friend in her church,
Holy Trinity Christchurch. This soon developed into a passion
that led her to Newport Floral Society where she was Chair
for the last four years. This Flower Festival has been staged
by the Three Counties & South Wales Area of NAFAS (The
National Association of Flower Arranging Societies). As
well as South Wales this covers Herefordshire, Gloucestershire
and Worcestershire and members from this wide area have
come together to create the magic of Christmas in flowers
that you see around you. As Festival Chair, Jane and her
Committee are proud on behalf of their Area to be able to
contribute to the St Woolos Rescue Appeal and hope that
the beauty of the flowers will enhance your enjoyment of
theevening's event.
